Mesa Verde National Park

It’s easy to forget that this beautiful land we’ve been treading on once belonged to the Native Americans, but Mesa Verde serves as a stunning reminder, as it holds the ruins of the Ancestral Pueblo people. Not hundreds, but thousands of years ago they built cliff dwellings deep into the rocky canyons here. The breathtaking ruins that remain give a glimpse of the way they cared for the Earth and for each other, living together in community while cultivating the land above them.

A six-mile drive through the park lead us to vistas of these remarkable dwellings and took us on a hike around Spruce Tree House, the largest we saw. We also discovered pit houses, which were homes dig deep into the earth and were architecturally fascinating.

  1. Hope you explained to Maggie how small people can slide down the small ventilation holes on the sides of the kiva - even if they aren't supposed to.
